Our municipal law practice encompasses a broad sweep of different legal services. This breadth is reflected in the increasingly prominent role municipalities play both in regulation of private-sector conduct, and the municipality's role as an economic catalyst. Over the last two decades, Maine city and town governments have progressed from a reactive approach, merely regulating land-uses which find their way into their geographic boundaries, to becoming more proactive. Municipalities have become significant economic players in development efforts, whether making or guaranteeing loans, or creating development districts with tax increment financing available.
We represent both cities and towns, on the one hand, as well as the individuals and businesses interacting with them, on the other. There is often a world of difference between traditional small towns and major cities. Our firm is experienced in both arenas.
We have represented municipalities with annual budgets of over sixty million dollars, as well as some of Maine's smaller intimate towns. We are well versed in the mechanics of municipal government, and we know from considerable experience that the local politics which often colors municipal decision-making cannot be ignored, whether we are representing the municipality or someone dealing with that municipality.
