Employment/Labor Law

Employment related disputes are widely recognized as an emerging and growing area of legal practice throughout the nation. Our firm boasts of an extensive practice in representing both businesses and individuals in employment-related matters throughout southern, coastal, and central Maine.

With the advent of such federal laws as the Employees' Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), The Civil Rights Act of 1991, the Americans With Disabilities Act, and others, employers and employees today are faced with a complex, and oftentimes confusing, set of regulations with which to comply. We have extensive experience in assisting Maine employers with the development of employment handbooks and personnel policy manuals to insure their compliance with State and Federal requirements. Our attorneys have authored journals and manuals designed to simplify the compliance procedures for our business clients.

Our knowledge and experience has also benefited many Maine employees who have suffered from wrongful termination, discrimination on account of age, disability, race or gender, and many other adverse employment actions. Our practice in this area has grown to include representation of municipal employee labor unions in contract negotiations and grievance procedures alike. Our attorneys have extensive experience in settling such disputes in various forums, including arbitration, mediation, administrative agencies, and State and Federal courts.

We represent various collective bargaining units, and their members, in various capacities, including formation, contract negotiations, grievances and arbitrations. Our clients include the Maine State Troopers Association, the Maine Association of Police and the Maine State Law Enforcement Association.
